Essential Facts
Working with Nightwatch radios
· Two Nightwatch radios are stored at the Manvers Street Base.
They should always be set on channel 1.
· Our normal call sign is ‘City Pastors’. You may also use call signs ‘City Pastor 1’, ‘City Pastor 2’
· The radios are equipped with earpieces. When fitted, the remote mic is activated.
· When at base, the plug for the earpiece may be carefully disconnected to allow CPs to listen in.
(N.B. Switch radio off if disconnecting or reconnecting earpieces).
1) To use the earpiece and remote PTT (Press To Transmit) switch
Keep the radio handset dry inside your jacket, (e.g. jacket inside pocket). Clip the remote PTT switch on to your clothing. After switching on, adjust the volume.
When you fit the earpiece in your ear, take care not to strain the cable or trap it in your zip.
When no earpiece is fitted, operate the radio's microphone by pressing the big round PTT button on the left side of the radio just above the middle of the front cover.
2) When wishing to speak
Listen to ensure no one else is speaking, then press the remote PTT switch.
Keeping the PTT switch pressed down wait two seconds before you start speaking. Release the switch immediately after speaking to allow a reply.
Hold the mic about 3" (8 cm) from your mouth.
Speak slowly and clearly.
Always finish with the word ‘OVER’, and if concluding, ‘OVER AND OUT' (see below)
You ‘CITY PASTORS CALLING TANGO VICTOR, OVER'.
Tango Victor: GO AHEAD CITY PASTORS, OVER’.
You: ‘GOOD EVENING CITY PASTORS LOGGING ON FOR DUTY WITH FOUR OF US ON PATROL, OVER’.
Tango Victor:, YOU HAVE A CLEAR SIGNAL, HAVE A GOOD EVENING, OVER AND OUT.
3) Other standard phrases to be used:
'GO AHEAD' = "pass on your message" /
'SAY AGAIN' = "Repeat message"
'MESSAGE RECEIVED' = "message received and understood"
'STAND BY' = "Message received, but not able to reply immediately"
'OK SO FAR' = "Have understood message so far"
NB. Several short messages, pausing with 'OK so far?', are better than one long message.
4) Phonetic Alphabet:
Should be used to clarify letters and spellings :
* A - alpha * B - bravo * C - charlie * D - delta * E - echo * F - foxtrot * G – golf * H - hotel * I - india
* J - juliet * K - kilo * L - lima * M - mike * N – November * O - oscar * P - papa * Q - quebec
* R - romeo * S - sierra * T – tango * U - uniform * V - victor * W - whisky * X - x-ray * Y - yankee * Z – zulu
5) Notes on radios:
When switched ON, take care not to press the PTT button by mistake. (This prevents others replying.)
Do not touch the small red button on top. This is a panic button, and will trigger an emergency response from police etc. (If pressed inadvertently - call CCTV immediately to cancel.)
Protect the radios from water ingress (particularly the earpiece terminals).
The earpiece wires are easily damaged. Do not bend or coil the wire tightly and be careful not to trap it in your zip.
On no account lose a radio. If you do - inform CCTV immediately.
Do not leave a radio unattended unless it is locked away at base.
NB If the red LED on top of the radio blinks when the PTT switch is pressed, this may indicate a low battery charge. Put this unit on charge for about half an hour as soon as possible. (Remove a charger from the cupboard and plug it directly into a mains socket.) It should then work for the rest of the shift.
6) At end of shift : (after logging Off).
· Turn the radios OFF by rotating the volume control fully anti-clockwise until the white dot faces the front. N.B. Charging with the radio on will damage the battery.
· Make sure the radios are fully locked into their chargers by doing the “Wobble Test”. The charger timers are pre-set and do not need to be touched. Charging takes place between 5pm- 8pm on the day of the next shift. Check plug in rear of charger is fully inserted.
7) Phone charger.
· This is to be carried to assist people with flat mobile phones.
· The lead from the mains supply should be left behind. The lead(s) to connect to the mobile phones should be taken out with the power pack.
· At end of shift: reconnect the power pack to the mains supply.
